Why was it created?
We noticed that lots of space was being wasted on old backups which were never being pruned.
We couldn’t find a tool on the market which did this, so we built one.
What does it do?
It trims old backups, and keeps the last backup of any month into an archive folder.
Why was this important to Watchman Monitoring?
Because we could do this, and give back to the community.
BackupMinder gives us a simple way to track the progress of backups from a number of applications.
The UI needed to set up this kind of monitoring wouldn’t fit well into our current UI, and we wanted to keep Watchman Monitoring as simple as possible. Having this as a standalone tool makes sense.
Releasing BackupMinder on github allowed us to get the UI just good enough for us, and release it.
