At the heart of so many web based applications is a database. Ours, like many others, is based in MySQL, however it was trapped in a shell which was one and a half years old, and our constant growth lately was taking us to the limits of the old setup’s boundaries.
Finding a good Database Administrator while under duress is a sure way to chose the wrong DBA, so we implemented some temporary measures, allowing us to find the right people to solve our growth issues properly.
Thanks to Chris, a fantastic member of RightScale’s Devops team, and to Christian, our newest Watchman Monitoring staffer, we’ve got our database problems well under control.
As of today, our servers are running on SSD backed servers, and backups continue to run as expected. We look forward to smooth sailing as we go about upgrading the rest of our infrastructure: first the load balancers, with an eye to IPv6 support, and then the application server tier.
